Preserving the Past
New York, NYIntrepid Sea, Air, & Space Museum - Corsair Exhibit
The Intrepid Museum, founded in 1982, Strives to promote the awareness and understanding of history, science, and service through their bold and immersive exhibits. The Corsair exhibit at the Intrepid Museum is a tribute to one of the most iconic fighter planes of World War II. The Vought F4U Corsair, known for its distinctive inverted gull wing design and impressive combat performance, is a treasured artifact. Preserving such a valuable piece of history requires an environment that ensures its longevity and integrity.
Collado Engineering was retained to provide consulting engineering services for the construction of the enclosure. Designing an air conditioning system for a museum exhibit presents unique challenges. The primary objective is to maintain a stable climate to protect the artifact from environmental damage. For the Corsair exhibit, this meant creating a system that could precisely control temperature and humidity levels.
Key to the success of this project was the development of a highly insulated and airtight display case. This display case would serve as a microclimate, isolating the Corsair from the varying conditions of the museum environment. CE implemented a state-of-the-art HVAC system capable of maintaining temperature and humidity within narrow margins and designed to respond quickly to any fluctuations. The integrated humidification system works seamlessly with the HVAC system to maintain optimal humidity levels. Utilizing smart technology, CE developed a control system that continuously monitors and adjusts the climate conditions within the display case ensuring real-time responses to any environmental changes, providing an extra layer of protection for the exhibit.
